Is Digg in Trouble?

A story on Read Write Web asks if Digg is in trouble. The premise is based on a new comScore report that Yahoo! Buzz has now overtaken Digg in terms of traffic volume. The money quote:

According to a new report from comScore, in April Yahoo! Buzz for the first time did more traffic than digg - Buzz got nearly 7 million U.S. unique visitors in April, a 74% growth over March. What's more, about 51% of Yahoo! Buzz users are women, compared to just 39% women for digg.

Being in trouble can be defined in many ways, and the arrival of Yahoo! Buzz was always going to be disruptive to the incumbents. The real question is not whether Digg is in trouble or not, but whether, and how, they'll respond to this new competition.

They might end up finding a niche and occupying it forcefully, like Slashdot. Or they might go the way of the dodo. Digg is not in trouble yet, but now a sword hangs above their heads. It'll be fun to watch. The popcorn is on me.

(do you have a deja-vu

(do you have a deja-vu feeling that we have discussed this already, Pierre?)

Anyway, Yahoos demographics is clearly different from Diggs, so it has nothing to worry about. I say YB and Digg make a nice couple, with YB housing the housewives and Digg all the alternative population.
