How Many Links Does Digg Get You?

Submitted by SocialAlerter on Mon, 05/12/2008 - 21:00.

Question: How many links does a story that just went popular on Digg have?

Another question: Say a story goes popular on Digg today, how many links will it have in one week?

Let's go for a hat-trick: how many links will a story have in 30 days?

Answers:

An average of 82 links at the moment of going popular (average of 1795 stories), an average of 987 links after a week (average of 1408 stories), and an average of 1167 links after 30 days (average of 1560 stories).

How do I know? Because Social Alerter has been tracking backlink data for all stories that have gone popular on Digg over the past couple of weeks. Social Alerter queries Yahoo! at the moment a new story goes popular, after 7 days, and after 30 days.

Now you may ask: Wouldn't it be nice if you could see all the data, including the backlink data, for any URL that Social Alerter tracks? Absolutely! Just subscribe to the blog's feed to be the first to know about an awesome Social Alerter feature coming soon!

Neat :)

Neat :)

I hope you will differentiate by category, otherwise it won't be that fun. Also by site, maybe (because Digg favorites can get links to anything, maybe even a sponsored post [worth checking out]).

Additional data, such as how popular it was on other sites, may help as well, because, you know, stumblers link occasionally, too.

Thanks.

Nice to know that investing

Nice to know that investing time in creating good information for digg is not a complete waste of time. Just out of curiousity, what was the lowest number of links and what was the highest number of links?

The maximum and minimum

The maximum and minimum backlinks, along with some more fun facts are the subject of a future post. Please let me know if you have other factoids you're interested in and I'll see what I can do to get them too.

"average of 1795 stories"

I thought this would be associated by the number of diggs...?

Actually, there isn't a

Actually, there isn't a strong correlation between the number of diggs and backlink counts. Surprising, eh?

A nice idea and some

A nice idea and some impressive numbers for sure!

But 82 backlinks when going popular? That is a hint, that Digg is not responsible for all the backlinks.

One would have to submit a couple of news from new, unknown websites, and not promote them anywhere else to see how many links Digg can really create.

The best thing about Digg is

The best thing about Digg is that it goes up on Goggle right away and usually faster than the book mark you put it on.
