Title Case Works Best for Digg

Tip: Use title case when submitting to Digg.

Methodology

One thing I always think about when submitting to Digg and elsewhere is what kind of capitalization I should use, especially for headings. There are two types of capitalization:

  • Title Case, Where Almost Every Word is Capitalized
  • Sentence case, where only the first word is capitalized

So what do Diggers prefer?

I analyzed 24537 stories that were submitted to Digg and were picked up by Social Alerter. Because they made it to the database, it means that these stories had enough traction to make it high in the upcoming list. That means they had about 15 diggs each at least. Of those 24000 stories, just under 1800 went popular (how is that for some stats?). So I analyzed both the whole set and the popular set separately to study the capitalization pattern.

Results

By far, the great majority (over 70%) of the stories in both the upcoming and popular sets were title cased. There was no stastically significant difference between the two sets.

The first result is the key conclusion: use title case.

The latter observation is interesting but I cannot draw conclusions from it... yet :)
